The Darkest Night (Lords of the Underworld 1) by Gena Showalter
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
My book review of The Darkest Night:
So many books, so little time. There are titles I want to read and get around to. Gena Showalter’s Lords of the Underworld series fell into that category until I got a recommendation from one of my readers. I decided to dive in.
The series premise is quite intriguing-a group of warriors are cursed by eternal punishment and possessed by demons. Hot, sexy warriors who are fatally flawed but fiercely loyal. Oh yeah. And when a girl seeks out these hot guys to help her deal with her own issue-hearing voices she can’t control-the sparks will fly.
This book started off so strong that I thought for sure I’d be giving it a full 5 stars. Then it got a bit off track. The tale begins in the typical his/hers POV romance format, but then starts skipping around to POV’s outside the love interests. I don’t mind multiple POV’s in other genres, but not so much in romance. We get snippets from the other possessed warriors, another girl caught up with the warriors, another faction of warriors, even the antagonist briefly.
The author is clearly setting up the rest of the series by doing this. But it pulled me away from the primary romance a lot. I found myself skimming to get back to their story. I wanted to see how they were dealing with the series arc, not be shown through POV thoughts that a girl obviously intended as a later love interest is already falling for her demon warrior. Save it for her book!
Also, be aware that the love scenes in this book are graphic, more erotic than mainstream romance. I don’t mind that, so it wasn’t a problem. If it’s a good romance, bring on the heat!
